Triumph Cylinder Base Nut

A cylinder base nut is a critical fastener used on Triumph motorcycle engines (particularly classic parallel twins and modern classics) to secure the cylinder barrel to the crankcase. These nuts are typically installed over long studs that pass through the cylinder head and cylinder, drawing the entire top end together.

 

In Triumph engines, the base nuts play a vital role in maintaining even clamping force to ensure a proper seal at the cylinder base gasket, preventing oil leaks and loss of compression. They are usually tightened to a specific torque sequence and value, as uneven torque can lead to distortion, gasket failure, or stud damage. High-quality steel-often zinc-plated or stainless-is used to resist corrosion, especially on air‑cooled models where the fasteners are exposed to heat cycles and road debris.
